Documented by George Stover Adventure Productions
1/27/98 Crystal River , Florida
Despite the protection of the Federal Endangered Species Act , the nation's population of manatees has suffered some serious setbacks in recent years.
The gentle but gigantic marine mammals, known by some as "sea cows", continue to be threatened by boat strikes, habitat degradation and mysterious illnesses.
Now, Emmy-award-winning television producers George Stover and Scott Broom have joined with a team of biologists, veterinarians, preservationists, dive operators and divers to document dramatic and heartwarming encounters that happen when manatees and people cross paths in the wild.
Florida is the backdrop for much of the action. The result will be a half-hour television documentary offered for U.S. and global distribution.
Highlights include:
-- The dramatic rescue of a manatee clinging to life after being struck by a speeding boat.
-- A behind the scenes look at efforts of scientists trying understand a plague of manatee deaths caused by toxic algae outbreaks in Florida .
-- Heartwarming and dramatic encounters between manatees and swimmers bold enough to venture into the gentle mammals' home waters.
The program is being produced with the cooperation of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service , the U.S.Geological Survey, the Citrus County Department of Tourism, Sea World of Orlando, Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park, local dive operators and numerous dedicated preservationists and divers.
Citrus County's famed Crystal River and Homosassa River are the locations for most of the action.
The TV documentary "Manatee Encounters" will premiere in November 1998 Manatee Awareness Month , in Crystal River , Florida.

TV Producers Need Help Naming New Manatee Documentary
March 18, 1998
The producer of a new Nationally-distributed documentary on Manatees want Citrus County school children to come up with a title for the show.
They're urging students to enter the "Name-that-show!" contest at their schools.
"This important project would not be possible without the outpouring of support from local people and agencies," said George Stover of George Stover Adventure Productions, "now we think the region's kids should have the opportunity to help out by putting their stamp on our television show."
The manatees will depend on the next generation for continued survival, according to Stover. Giving students the opportunity to put their own title on an important national production gives them a unique chance to have a personal connection to the efforts to save the manatees, Stover said.
Crews from George Stover Adventure Productions have been visiting the Crystal River/Homosassa Springs area of Florida throughout the winter to document the plight of the state's manatee population.
The project has been supported by Citrus County Tourism, the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park, local dive operators including American Pro Dive and Birds Underwater, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, USGS, and Sea World of Orlando.
The new television show will be ready for national distribution in the fall of 1998. The winner of the contest will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. The bond will be presented to the winner at the premier of the show scheduled in November, "Manatee Awareness Month", in Crystal River.

SCARLET IBIS FINDS A NEST ON SEAFLOOR IN TOBAGO
The "Scarlet Ibis", a 350-foot roll-on/ roll-off ferry, which plied passengers and cargo between Trinidad and Tobago, was sunk as an artificial reef in 100 feet of water in the Caribbean Sea, three-quarters of a mile off Mount Irving Beach Resort on Tobago's southwest coast. The historic event occured through the efforts of Tourism and Industrial Development Company (TIDCO) and the Tobago Dive Operators Association, in cooperation with Coastal Diving Services.
To record the event,TIDCO contracted a North American dive video crew, George Stover Adventure Productions, which directed and Produced the sucessful "Dance of the Devil Rays, a well received video that has aired in markets throughout the United States.
The "Scarlet Ibis" is currently lying flat on a bed of sand, and divers visiting the spot have already registered see coral and polyps and a 6-foot codfish swimming in schools in the wreck.
TIDCO's project manager and officer responsible for the Dive and Cruise sectors, Neemah Persad, disclosed the TIDCO and up to 30 marine-related groups and individuals had been working on the project for the past eight months, underscoring the magnitude and importance of the exercise. She sees the wreck of the "Ibis" and an "ideal support for sea life, including migrating and resident fish," adding that "coral and sponges need stable substrata in order to proliferate. The new dive spot has been hailed by novice and exoerienced divers, as well as environmentalists who are pleased that the new artificial reef presents a solution in the right direction to the perennial concern expressed about Tobago's natural reef erosion," Persad stated.
For more information on visiting the "Scarlet Ibis" call TIDCO at 868-623-INFO.
